PC's & the internet

Spend a lot of time on your PC?

With this page I intend share some of what I know about PC's & the Internet.

The first thing you need when surfing the net is a Internet Service Provider (ISP) and there are tones of these, So how do you decide on witch one two use?

Well this is all a question of how much time you spend online. Most people these days are using Broadband, Broadband is a slightly faster method of connecting to the internet than the more traditional method of dialup. Basically all you need is a broadband modem and a connection to a broadband phone line. Most internet service providers will let you connect wirelessly witch if you have a wireless enabled laptop makes it a lot easier to connect without all those trailing wires. You can even connect in your garden! It also has the advantage of allowing you to connect other wireless hardware such as psp’s and WIs. Just make sure when setting up your wireless connection you secure the network. The last thing you want are others stealing you bandwidth especially if you have a monthly download limit. I use Talktalk broadband I just pay for there international tariff for my phone line and the broadband connection is free. But I have recently learned of the latest sky broadband offer where all you pay is a one of fee of £40 and have to have an active sky subscription but there is no monthly fee so I’m tempted to switch.

Here is a useful comparison chart to help you decide on the most popular ISP’s

Chart

Emails

You normally get an email address with your ISP but you can also get web based mail providers such as Yahoo and Hotmail. These provide a free email address that can be accessed form any computer that has an active internet connection.

Search engines

There are several search engines on the Internet, I find the best way to search for things is to use Google, but there are several others such as www.Ask.com (formally Ask Greaves), yahoo and Lycos.

WebPages

Most ISP’s will provide you with some web space If you want to create your own webpage this can be fun and useful if you want to advertise something. If you want your own .com or .co.uk web space then these are available from Domain Name providers but they are dependent on what’s available and can prove costly.

Drivers

If you are looking for drivers for any PC hardware I've found the best place to look is a site called www.downlaod.com this site is set out in a user friendly manner so you can normally find what you want. If not I find it is best just to look using Google or just go to the original manufactures site.

Buying a PC?

If your considering buying a PC it's worth wile looking round all the major stores such as PC World, Currys, Dell etc. to get an idea of what you are looking for before buying though it's worth considering alternative Places such as online stores these usually undercut any major store and can offer better support. With most major stores they can only support your computer in store for a month and after that they will refer you to a support line.

Cool Stuff

Whilst Surfing and talking to friends here are some cool things I’ve come across online:-

Myspace

Facebook

Skype

Aim

Windows Live Messenger

eBay (Warning – Can be very addictive!!)
